Berlin (dpa/d.de) – Calling for additional EU sanctions, Federal Overseas Minister Annalena Baerbock has warned towards the Russian “shadow fleet” following injury to an underwater energy cable off Finland. “Ships are at present damaging necessary submarine cables within the Baltic Sea nearly each month. Crews decrease anchors into the water, drag them for miles throughout the seabed for no obvious motive after which lose them when making an attempt to tug them up,” the Minister stated in an interview. She stated she discovered it tough to consider in coincidences. “That is an pressing wake-up name for us all. In a digitalised world, submarine cables are the communication arteries that maintain our world collectively,” warned Baerbock, including that higher safety was required for essential infrastructure.
The 170-kilometre Estlink 2 connection between Estonia and Finland was disrupted on Wednesday. The Finnish authorities suspect sabotage and detained the oil tanker Eagle S, which flies the Prepare dinner Islands flag. Its anchor may have precipitated the injury to the cable. In response to the EU, the ship is alleged to belong to the so-called Russian “shadow fleet” – cargo ships that Russia makes use of to bypass sanctions on things like oil transport.
