Washington (dpa / d.de) – Heads of state and authorities around the globe have expressed grief on the dying of former US President Jimmy Carter. Federal Chancellor Olaf Scholz mentioned that the “USA has misplaced a dedicated advocate for democracy”, and that the world had misplaced an ideal mediator who campaigned for peace within the Center East and for human rights. Germany was in mourning with its American mates, mentioned Scholz.
Carter handed away on Sunday on the age of 100 in Plains, Georgia, surrounded by his household. After his presidency from 1977 to 1981, Carter and his spouse Rosalynn based the Carter Heart in Atlanta to advertise democracy, human rights and financial improvement. He actively devoted himself to his humanitarian work properly into previous age. Carter was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 2002 for his “decades-long dedication to the peaceable decision of worldwide conflicts”. US President Joe Biden has declared 9 January a nationwide day of mourning. He ordered the US flag on the White Home and the flags on all authorities buildings, navy installations and embassies to be flown at half-mast for 30 days.
