Greg Gumbel, a longtime CBS Sports activities broadcaster, has died of most cancers, his household mentioned Friday. He was 78.
Gumbel, a play-by-play announcer and studio host who beforehand labored for NBC Sports activities, “handed away peacefully surrounded by a lot love after a brave battle with most cancers,” his household mentioned in a press release launched by CBS Sports activities.
The assertion was signed by his spouse, Michelle, and daughter, Marcy.
“Greg approached his sickness like one would count on he would, with stoicism, grace and positivity,” the assertion says. “He leaves behind “a legacy of affection, inspiration and dedication to over 50 extraordinary years within the sports activities broadcast trade.”
Gumbel, the older brother of former “TODAY” co-host Bryant Gumbel, started working at CBS Sports activities in 1989. He left in 1994 to work at NBC Sports activities earlier than returning to CBS in 1998.
