A South Korean courtroom granted on Sunday an extension of impeached President Yoon Suk Yeol’s detention, saying there was “concern” that Yoon may “destroy proof” in a felony probe associated to his short-lived declaration of martial legislation in early December.
Final Wednesday, Yoon turned the primary sitting South Korean president to be arrested. Investigators probing Yoon for alleged rebel requested a courtroom in Seoul on Friday to increase his detention after he refused to be questioned.
The Seoul Western District Court docket stated it authorized the detention warrant requested by the Corruption Investigation Workplace for Excessive-ranking Officers (CIO).
The rationale for the approval was “concern that the suspect might destroy proof,” the courtroom stated in an announcement.
Below the brand new warrant, Yoon could be detained for as much as 20 days. He’s being held on the Seoul Detention Centre.
To this point, Yoon has stonewalled efforts by the CIO to interrogate him, refusing to attend questioning. It was unclear if he’ll co-operate with investigators throughout his prolonged detention.
