A number one progressive Home Democrat is commending President Biden’s sweeping commutation order for individuals on the federal demise row, calling the demise penalty itself “racist.”
“The President’s determination to commute the demise sentences of 37 people on federal demise row is a historic and groundbreaking act of compassion that can save lives, handle the deep racial disparities in our prison authorized system, and ship a strong message about redemption, decency, and humanity,” Rep. Ayanna Pressley, D-Mass., mentioned in a press release on Monday.
“The demise penalty is a racist, flawed, and essentially unjust punishment that has no place in any society.”

Pressley argued the demise penalty has overwhelmingly focused Black and Brown communities “and didn’t make America any safer.”
The Massachusetts lawmaker, a member of the hardline-left group of Home Democrats dubbed the “Squad,” has been on the forefront of the progressive push to abolish the demise penalty.
Biden’s clemency order impacts practically everybody on the federal demise row in the US.
